What You’ll Need
How do you make chicken parmesan from scratch? It’s easy! This easy baked chicken parmesan recipe is ready in 30 minutes or less.
You only need a few ingredients that are listed below, and you can follow my step by step instructions in the recipe card!
- chicken breasts, cut in half
- all-purpose flour
- Italian seasoned bread crumbs
- grated parmesan cheese
- salt
- black pepper
- eggs
- olive oil
- butter
- favorite marinara sauce
- shredded parmesan cheese
- cooked spaghetti noodles
- Fresh basil or parsley, chopped for optional garnish
Tips for Making This Recipe The Best
- Buy chicken breasts that are similar in size for even cooking. If some of your breasts are larger than other, you can pound them with a meat mallet.
- Use Italian seasoned bread crumbs! The added flavor is so delicious.
- Only flip the chicken once in the pan over the stove top. I like to have a thick breading, and if you flip it more than once, you risk the breading coming off the chicken.
- Use a instant read meat thermometer. You can get cheap ones off of amazon but it makes such a difference when cooking chicken! No more guessing if it’ll be over or under cooked.
- My favorite marinara sauce is the organic sauce from Costco. Kirkland Signature Organic Marinara Sauce.
What is the difference between chicken parmesan and chicken parmigiana?
Just the name!
Chicken Parmesan or Chicken Parmigiana are both the same delicious, mouth-watering dish that you know well and love. It’s a breaded chicken cutlet with lots of melted parmesan cheese.
You can also make eggplant parmesan for a plant based dish!

Easy Chicken Parmesan
Classic, easy chicken parmesan cooked on the stovetop first, then finished in the oven. Delicious, cheesy, and a family favorite!
Ingredients
- 3 chicken breasts, cut in half
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 large eggs beaten
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil
- 2 Tablespoons butter
- 24 oz favorite marinara sauce
- 1 cup shredded parmesan cheese
- 2 cups cooked spaghetti noodles
- Fresh basil or parsley, chopped for optional garnish
Instructions
- Trim chicken breasts and slice in half length-wise. Season with salt and pepper.
- In a shallow bowl, stir together flour, bread crumbs, parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper.
- In a second bowl, whisk 2 eggs until frothy.
- Dip both sides of each chicken cutlet into the eggs, letting any excess egg drip off, then dip in the flour mixture. Press chicken into the breading to ensure a thick, even coating.
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Heat a large non-stick pan over medium heat and add olive oil to the bottom of the pan. Add the butter and let it melt. Add chicken in batches (don't crowd the pan), cooking for 5-6 minutes per side or until golden brown and just cooked through. Only flip the chicken once.
- Place the cooked, golden-brown chicken on a baking sheet lined with foil. Bake uncovered for 15 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F.
- Pour about 1/4 cup of marinara sauce on top of each chicken breast, then top with shredded parmesan cheese. Place the chicken back into the oven until cheese is melty.
- Serve chicken over spaghetti noodles tossed in marinara sauce. Garnish with chopped parsley or basil if desired.
