This tortellini sausage soup is what dreams are made of! It has cheesy tortellini, flavorful sausage, kale, cream, and all the seasonings and spices! It’s totally delicious and so easy to make a batch! You can make this recipe in your instant pot, or on your stovetop! Tortellini Soup with Sausage
The sausage and tortellini pair so well together in this delightful dish!
For the sausage- I like to buy Italian or sage-flavored sausage! It’s the best for this soup but any sausage will work.
For the tortellini- I like to buy the four-cheese fresh tortellini from Costco! It cooks up really quickly. But, feel free to use any tortellini you want! Just be mindful of the cooking times on each package and be sure you let it cook long enough in the soup before serving.
What You’ll Need to Make this Soup
- Olive oil or butter
- Italian sausage
- Onion
- Garlic
- Chicken broth
- Italian seasoning
- Onion powder
- Garlic powder
- Ground mustard
- Cayenne pepper
- Better than Bullion cubes
- Pesto sauce
- Kale
- Shredded carrots
- Tortellini
- Heavy cream
- Instant potato flakes
How to Cook this Soup
For this recipe, you can cook it in your Instant Pot or on your stovetop! I like cooking soup in my Instant Pot because it cooks so quickly. But either cooking method will work!
For the stovetop method, follow the Instant pot directions by browning the meat, onions, and garlic together. Add all the seasonings and broth to the pot and bring it to a boil. Once boiling, add the bullion, pesto, kale, carrots, and tortellini and cook until the tortellini is soft. Add the heavy cream and instant potato flakes to thicken the soup and serve hot!

Tortellini Sausage Soup
The most delicious tortellini sausage soup! Creamy, comforting, and crowd-pleasing too!
Ingredients
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil or butter
- 1 pound Italian sausage
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- 7 cups chicken broth
- 1 Tablespoon Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
- Dash cayenne pepper
- 1/4 cup pesto sauce
- 2 Better than Bullion cubes
- 2 cups kale
- 1 cup shredded carrots
- 16 ounces tortellini
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup instant potato flakes
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Turn the instant pot to saute and add the oil and sausage. Cook until the sausage is browned and cooked through. Rinse the sausage and return to the pot.
- Add the onion and garlic and cook until the onion is translucent.
- Add the chicken broth, seasonings, pesto, and bullion cubes and stir. Turn the instant pot off of saute.
- Lock the lid and manually set the pressure to 5 minutes. It will display ON when it comes to pressure, then count down from 5. Quick release the pressure by turning the valve from sealing to venting.
- Add the kale, carrots, and tortellini and stir. Allow the tortellini to cook through.
- Add the heavy cream and instant potato flakes to thicken the soup. Season with salt and pepper to taste and enjoy!
