- Butter: I use salted butter to add a salty balance to the sweet.
- Brown sugar: The deep flavor brown sugar provides is key to making this caramel crack.
- Chocolate chips: I use milk chocolate chips to make the melted chocolate layer, but you can opt for white chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, or even a chopped chocolate bar.
- Toppings: I add crushed candy canes to half the batch to make the candy festive, but nuts, M&M’s, toffee bits, pretzels, or sprinkles are also significant! Or you can leave it plain, too!
How to Make Christmas Crack
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Line a baking sheet with foil and nonstick cooking spray.
- Place saltines along the bottom of the pan.
- In a saucepan over medium-high heat, melt the butter and brown sugar, whisk, and let it boil for a few minutes.
- Pour the caramel over the saltines spread out and bake in the oven for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven, sprinkle with chocolate chips, and let it sit or place back in the oven for a few more minutes to melt the chocolate.
- Spread the chocolate over the saltines, sprinkle with chopped peppermint candies, and let harden. Crack when you are ready to serve into big chunks. Enjoy!
