This Apple Cider Donut Cake with brown butter is what Fall cake dreams are made of! This cake itself resembles those delicious apple cider donuts! I then top the cake with brown butter to add flavor and moisten the outside before topping it with cinnamon sugar! This cake is so incredibly flavor and moist, I am sure you will love it! It’s like one big donut, but in a cake! Make it with me!
Apple Cider Donut Cake
Apple Cider Donuts are so popular this time of year, and for good reason, they are delicious! I love the fall flavors of cinnamon and apple!
I wanted to create a cake that resembled those same fall flavors, but fit for a hungry crowd. I can honestly say this cake blew my mind and surpassed my expectations!
The cake is soft and moist, with the most delicious crunch on the edges. The cake is made with honeycrisp apple, apple cider, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice!
Brown Butter!
I told you, I’d be putting brown butter in and on everything this year! I can’t be stopped! My apple spice cake with brown butter glaze and pumpkin cinnamon rolls with brown butter glaze are some other fall favorites of mine!
Brown butter is so incredibly easy to make, and it adds such a delicious aroma and flavor to baked goods like this one!
This time, I’m using straight up browned butter on the outside of the cooked apple cider cake to moisten the edges and get the cinnamon sugar mix to stick. Don’t sleep on brown butter!
It’s easy to make too! Wondering how to make brown butter? Simply add the butter to a sauce pan on medium high heat and watch the color turn from yellow to amber, stirring consistently.
The butte will begin to foam and bubble a bit before it changes colors and the change happens quickly, so watch closely! Once the color has changed, get the brown butter off the heat to stop the cooking process.
Apple Cider Donut Cake
This Apple Cider Donut Cake with brown butter would not be complete without the cinnamon sugar coating on the outside, just like an apple cider doughnut would have!
That is something I love about this cake! I am not a huge fan of frosting, so I like that this has a sugar coating instead!
This recipe is one I will be making all season long! It would be perfect for Halloween, football game watch parties, potlucks, and even Thanksgiving!

Apple Cider Donut Cake
This Apple Cider Donut Cake with Brown Butter is a fall favorite dessert! The cake is incredibly flavorful and moist, and the brown butter and cinnamon sugar coating really bring it all together!
Ingredients
- 1 large honeycrisp apple, peeled and chopped
- 1 1/2 cups apple cider
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup white sugar
- 3 large eggs
Brown Butter
- 1/2 cup salted butter
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 Tablespoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 10-cup bundt pan with nonstick baking spray.
- Place the chopped apple and apple cider in a saucepan and heat over medium-high heat. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce it to a simmer and cook until the apple is soft and the cider is absorbed. Measure out 1 cup of the apple mixture. Stir in the oil, milk and vanilla.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice.
- To a stand mixer, beat the butter until creamy. Beat in the sugars until the mixture is fluffy, about 5 minutes, scraping down the bowl as needed. Beat in each egg one at a time until fully combined.
- Alternate adding the dry ingredients and the apple cider/milk mixture, beginning and ending with the flour.
- Spread the batter into the greased bundt pan, smoothing out the top with a spatula.
- Bake the cake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until a tested inserted in the cake comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then gently removed the cake from the pan.
- To brown the butter, place butter in a small saucepan over medium heat and immediately begin whisking. Stir as it bubbles, and after 2 to 3 minutes or so you should see the color change to amber. Remove from heat immediately.
- In a small bowl, stir together the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- Brush the warm cake all over with the brown butter. Sprinkle and press the cinnamon sugar into the cake right after brushing with the brown butter. Enjoy!
