Apple Spice Cake
Apple is a fall staple ingredient! The grocery stores and local fruit stands are flourishing with apples right now, and they are firm and juicy!
My very favorite apple is a honeycrisp apple. Nothing beats a good honeycrisp!
For this recipe, you will need applesauce! You can use store bought or homemade! Plain or cinnamon flavored will work great!
It’s optional, but if you want even more apple flavor, feel free to dice up an apple into small cubes and add them to the batter. Yum!
Brown Butter Glaze
I could write a whole blog post on brown butter glaze, and really, I should! This glaze needs to go on EVERYTHING!!
Brown Butter Glaze or Frosting is so dang good. It has the best flavor and it goes well with everything!!
Don’t be surprised if you see a bunch more recipes call for brown butter glaze! My brown butter mizithra pasta recipe is another good one to try!
All you need is butter (browned), milk, vanilla, and powdered sugar!
How to Brown Butter for the Glaze
Browning butter is really simple. Add 2 sticks of butter to a medium saucepan and place it on medium heat.
We don’t want to do too much heat because we do not want to burn the butter.
Allow the butter to first melt down, then it will begin to boil. The butter will boil for about 3-4 minutes before it begins to foam.
When it foams, stir it repeatedly so you can watch the color. It will quickly go from yellow to a nice golden brown color and that’s when you want to remove it from the heat. Watch closely because it changes quick and if you don’t catch it, it will burn.
Add the milk, vanilla, and powdered sugar to finish off making the brown butter glaze for the apple spice cake. The glaze should be runny and pourable, and it will set as it cools on the cake.
