What You Need To Make Classic Lasagna
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound ground Italian sausage
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 28-ounce can San Marzano tomatoes
- 8-ounce can tomato sauce
- 2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 1/2 lb dry lasagna noodles (about nine lasagna noodles)
- 2 cups Ricotta cheese
- 4 cups Mozzarella cheese, grated, divided
- 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 eggs
- 2 tablespoons Italian Seasoning Blend

How To Prepare a Classic Lasagna
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
- Cook the ground meat, onion, garlic, and a pinch of salt and pepper in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking them into small pieces as they cook. Drain any excess grease.
- Stir in the tomato paste, basil, oregano, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, for about a minute, until the mixture smells fragrant.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and brown sugar. Stir to combine.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer and cook for 5-10 minutes
- Mix Ricotta cheese with 2 cups of mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, eggs, and Italian Seasoning Blend in a separate mixing bowl.
- Ladle a cup of sauce over the bottom of a 13x9x2-inch casserole or lasagna dish. Arrange one layer of lasagna noodles lengthwise over the sauce. Ladle a third of the remaining sauce over the noodles.
- Sprinkle a layer of a third of the grated mozzarella on top of the lasagna sauce. Add half of the ricotta mixture, placing cheese dollops every couple of inches.
- Apply the second layer of noodles and top with half of the remaining sauce. Add half of the remaining mozzarella, ricotta cheese, and another thin sprinkling of parmesan.
- Finish with another layer of noodles. Spread the remaining sauce over the top layer of noodles and sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake at 375 degrees for 45-55 minutes, or until bubbly and golden brown. Remove the foil for the final 15 minutes of cooking time.
