Do you struggle every summer to slice up that watermelon? Is a full watermelon daunting and intimidating? Do you often buy the precut up watermelon at the store to skip and step and avoid the hassle? Well, you do not have to feel that way any more! I want to show you how I make slicing a watermelon, quick, easy, and perfect every time! I have recorded a full video tutorial to demonstrate the way that I cube up my watermelon. Make it with me!
I learned how to cube a watermelon when I was working at the Little America as a Culinary Intern! One of my tasks that I did every single time I went in for work was prep the fruit for the breakfast bar. There was a little old lady chef in their that everyone called “mama” that was so good at it! Her lines were always so clean and perfect, the fruit was always perfectly round, and her cubes were always semetrical. She tried to teach me each time how to do her technique, and in the beginning I was terrible at it. Over time, I got better and better at it! My lines still aren’t perfect and neither are my cubes, but at least I am fast at it! I’m so grateful I know how to cube all sorts of fruit now, not just watermelon! Cantaloupe, Honey-due, and even Pineapple are all sliced using this same method!

How to Pick a Watermelon at the Grocery Store
- Pick it up: Big or small, the watermelon should feel heavy for its size.
- Look for the yellow spot: Watermelons develop a splotch where they rest on the ground. When this splotch is creamy yellow, it’s ripe.
- Give it a thump: Tap the underbelly of the watermelon. A ripe one will have a deep hollow sound. Under-ripe or over-ripe melons will sound dull.
