Summer Food Fun
As a kid, my favorite “crafts” were always the ones that I got to make in the kitchen. I’m sharing all the summer food fun details of these recipes and concepts in the Studio 5 Kitchen with Brooke Walker. Watch the segment here.
Whether you’re trying to beat the heat, fill a lazy afternoon, or just make some sweet memories with your little ones, Alex has curated a lineup of three delightful snack activities that double as kid-friendly kitchen experiments. These treats are simple, interactive, and best of all—delicious!

Ice Cream In A Bag
No ice cream maker? No problem! Make delicious vanilla ice cream at home in a plastic bag in just 15 minutes!
For One Serving
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup half and half
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 3 Tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 sandwich-sized ziplock bags
- 1 gallon-sized ziplock bag
- 1/3 cup ice cream, rock salt
- 3 cups or more of ice
- Add the heavy cream, half-and-half, milk, sugar, and vanilla extract to one of the sandwich Ziploc bags. Remove as much air as possible and seal the bag well. Double-bag it with another sandwich Ziploc bag.
- Add the ice cream into the gallon-sized ziplock bag with the ice and rock salt and seal the outer bag, pressing out as much extra air as possible.
- Shake the bag for 10 to 15 minutes, squishing and massaging the cream mixture in the middle to freeze it and turn it into ice cream.
- When the ice cream is ready, carefully open both the outside and inside bags, remove the ice cream bag, and be especially careful not to let any ice and salt mixture fall into the ice cream. Scoop it into bowls, top with your favorite ice cream toppings, and enjoy immediately.

Farmers Market Fresh Lemonade
Nothing beats a hot summer day like a plastic tub of ice-cold, freshly squeezed lemonade. It’s so easy to make at home, and it’s way more affordable!
For One Serving
- 1 lemon, washed well and cut into small wedges
- 1/4 – 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup ice
- 16 ounces of water
- 32 Ounce Plastic Container with Lid
- Ice
- Muddle the lemon slices and sugar in the plastic container until all the juice is released.
- Top with ice and water.
- Lock on the lid and shake until well incorporated and all the sugar dissolves. Enjoy!
Feel free to add other flavors to this by using the muddle to add other fresh fruits or using your favorite flavored drink syrups or creamers! Yum!

Summer Food Fun DIY Candy Necklaces and Kabobs
Just like it sounds! Grab some stretchy bracelet string and candy with holes and get to crafting! Things that worked well include
- Peach Rings
- Gummy Life Savers
- Sour Punch Straw Bites
- Fruit Loop Cereal
Any candy works for the kabobs because you can skewer them and make a hole in the candies without them. This is so darling, and it’s fun for the kids to make and enjoy!
